Interview The Hero's Journey of Smith Smith
by Peter de Kuster
What is the best thing that I love about my work?
What I prefer is the feeling of Liberty. Our thoughts and actions can often be reduced in their greatness in society, in Art and in the action that I lead I do not forbid myself anything and I do what I have to do without restraint…
What is my idea of perfect happiness?
I think that Perfect Happiness is an utopia. So my idea of Perfect Happiness would be to build things that make me happy every day, day after day and that would guide me towards this projection of Happiness.
What is my greatest fear?
My biggest fear is losing the people I love.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? When I feel my space of freedom restricted I can become aggressive and even more provocative
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?
In the middle of the paper Collage there are no people who transcend me 100% and that is why I like to evolve in this artistic practice. Much has already been done but much remains to be done. In the World of Arts I could quote the painter Florian Eymann with whom I had the pleasure to exhibit, I also love the draftsman Daniel Johnston and the sculptor Pierre Mouzat.
What is my greatest extravagance?
My biggest extravagance is to dare to believe that everything is possible as long as everything is not finished!
On what occasion would I lie?
I sometimes like to use the lie as a tool to know the real thoughts of people. It can make it clearer and faster, lie to lie is damaging…
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?
What I do not like in general is to have to manage myself and my communication work which is (when one wishes to advance and evolve) necessary. This task can sometimes be painful and time consuming. But communication also allows encounters, events and other surprises so I do what I have to do.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work?
The place where and the moment when I am the happiest in my practice of the Visual Arts is my Workshop whenever my path meets that of an improbable creation! I do not master when I work and I am always happy to be the first viewer of these nascent creations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbMvIlEmTJs
If I could, what would I change about myself?
This question is hard! I would really like to be less impatient, it would help me. But I’m working on it then it will change.
What is my greatest achievement in work?
My greatest achievement to date is not to give up and keep faith. Otherwise what I am most proud of is to succeed sometimes to fiare to reflect the public by proposing collages that raise questions of society or others.
Where would I most like to live?
After having tasted the sweetness of these places I can affirm that I would like to live in California, New Caledonia or even in New York, the electric city.
What is my most treasured possession?
Certainly my guitar Jagstang.
What is my most marked characteristic?
What characterizes me well would be the understanding of others and my ability to create.
What is my most inspiration allocation, in my city?
The place that feeds me is a big park located near my house, it is a place where refills are allowed, reflection and connection with Mother Nature! I can walk alone, as a family, go there to run, watch the water, the birds, this park is a lung… Inspiring
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city?
No favorite places! What I like is to discover new places precisely, so try new places every time. I like to drink beers on the terrace, all over the world!
What books influenced my life and how?
All the work of Henri Miller marked me for life. I think it comes from his form of mind for which I have the greatest respect, intelligent and crazy at the same time. Bukowsky’s work had a strong impact on me in my twenties, I read everything and it helped me to grow and take a step back. Then there are some outstanding books like “Dreaming of Babylon” by Richard Brautigan, my artist name Smith Smith is from this book. There is also “A Confederacy of Dunces” by John Kennedy Toole which is a powerful book, “The Dice Man” is a book that made me think too… To read. And finally I advise people to read the Bible and the Koran so that everyone can realize that books are books and that the rest is only human beings and furious madness…
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day?
Another hard question! Music has had a very important place since my teenage years, it made me born to myself and helped me throughout my life! So if I had to choose the music for the day of my death I will choose the one that helped me to be born and it would be a song of Nirvana, maybe Tourette’s or all the integral if death is not in a hurry.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life?
My heroes in real life are people who manage to fight every day against stupidity, racism, sexism, brutality and all the dirty things that we can live and meet… Those who struggle to maintain a balance in this world. I have much respect for them.
Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime?
Maybe “Human nature” by Michel Gondry
What role plays art in my life and work?
Art plays a role in my life! I played music in rock bands for 15 years, I produced records with two labs, I practiced silkscreen for a T-shirt brand, I have been doing collages for 4 years and I m Trying to paint. It is a visceral need that regulates many things in my life in society. It allows me to feed myself and to empty me. Regulate the whole!
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?
In all humility I do not have big fans. There are people who really appreciate my creations, my friends, family and those who cross the path of my work on the net or in an exhibition. What suits me.
Whom would I like to work with in 2017?
I have once led a lot of projects with very good artists and I am currently working on beautiful creations in duet… So I try to concentrate also on my objectives but a collage / drawing collaboration with Fiddle Tim would please me.
Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2017?
He is not a “Collagist” but it is an artist with whom I would like to be able to discuss, it is Ai Weiwei. His history and his course are quite fascinating.
What project, in 2017, am I looking forward to work on?
I have a project of collage that has been close to my heart for some time indeed and I promised to realize it in 2017, it is a large format of 1 meter by 1 meter which will represent a skull that I Only realize with barcodes that I have cut. A representation for me of our consumerist world
Where can you see me or my work in 2017?
I have had the chance to chain several good exhibitions in recent months as well as to present books released around my collages but to date I have nothing to program. Hard to find the right places. But we will meet, it’s a story of envy and confidence in life!
What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me?
This means to me that passion is a Heart story and that it never retreats as long as it beats. Until death
Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story?
I will quote friends, they are creative heroines! Charles-Eric Charrier, Lenparrot, Florian Eymann, Lane Collage, Timwnas Timwn, Gabrielle Jarzynski, Pierre Mouzat, Mike Bruno…
